Slate roofs and brick chimneys across a city at golden hour

Roofing · Merthyr Tydfil and the Valleys

Roofs that take the weather.

Re-roofs, repairs, chimneys, flat roofs and gutters, in natural slate, lead and timber, laid from the gutter up.

When it turns

Wind, rain, then more rain.

A roof is only tested on days like this. Every slate nailed, every lap right, every joint with the chimney dressed in lead.

After it passes

Dry inside.

Scroll on for what keeps it out.

01 Under the slate

Five layers between you and the weather.

Every roof we build goes on in the same order, from the timber up. Here is a piece of one, taken apart.

A sample of a slate roof: rafters, insulation, membrane, battens and slates
  1. 05

    Slate

Welsh or Spanish slate, holed and nailed twice, each course lapping the two below it.

  2. 04

    Battens

Treated timber, set out to the gauge so every course runs straight.

  3. 03

    Membrane

A breathable underlay. Rain stays out; the moisture from the house gets out.

  4. 02

    Insulation

Mineral wool between the rafters keeps the warmth in the rooms below.

  5. 01

    Rafters

The frame of the roof, checked first and put right before anything goes on.

02 From the gutter up

Stripped back, then built course by course.

  1. 01

    Strip it back

Old slates, battens and felt off, down to the rafters.

  2. 02

    Membrane

Rolled out from the gutter up, each run lapping the one below.

  3. 03

    Battens

Nailed level at the gauge for the slate.

  4. 04

    Slate

Course by course, from the gutter to the ridge.

  5. 05

    Lead and ridge

The chimney dressed in new lead, the ridge bedded and pointed.

03 What we do

Every part of the roof.

  • A new slate fitted in among weathered ones on an old roof
    01

    Repairs

Slipped and broken slates replaced, matched to the ones round them.

  • A new black rubber flat roof on an extension with a glass roof lantern
    02

    Flat roofs

Single-ply rubber on extensions and garages, with roof lanterns fitted.

  • A repointed brick chimney with two terracotta pots and new lead flashing
    03

    Chimneys and lead

Repointing, new pots, and lead flashing dressed down to the slate.

  • New white fascia and soffit with a black gutter and downpipe
    04

    Gutters and fascias

Fascias, soffits and gutters renewed, so the water goes where it should.
